St Peter's Religious Education Curriculum
Our School Motto is: Jesus is at the Heart of All We Do.
At St Peter’s, we place Religious Education at the heart of the curriculum, in order to help us to fulfil our mission to educate the whole child, academically, personally and spiritually.
‘Religious Education is never simply one subject among many but the foundation of the entire educational process.’
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, 2000
We regard Religious Education as more than a curriculum subject, it is something that guides every area of our school. Ten percent of our curriculum time at St Peter ’s is given to the teaching of Curriculum RE. The Religious Education within the school promotes awe, wonder, reverence and spirituality within every child. As children are taught about God’s love, they discover their Christian responsibilities and how they should pray and care for others through the Church’s moral and social teaching.
At St Peter’s we have developed our own RE curriculum. As well as our virtues, we use several other schemes of work and resources e.g.”The "Way the Truth and the Life" “Come and See:” “Ten Ten” in addition to, resources produced by Cafod and Caritas Care.
Curriculum Overviews
Our Catholic faith is central to day-to-day life of our school and all aspects of the curriculum. Our children are encouraged to recognise the importance of their faith as they respond to all forms of liturgy and collective worship with respect and reverence. Each child takes part in a daily act of worship (5-10 minutes), formal prayers are used to open and close the school daily sessions.
At St Peter’s School, we have a rich liturgical life in that the experiences we provide are wide ranging and take place in school, out of school, in Church and the wider community, and engage and involve pupils, parents, staff, governors and the parish.
Religious Education is further enhanced through our close relationship with the parishes of St Peter’s and St Joseph’s where, our children experience the liturgical life of the church by attendance and active participation in the Mass and the sacraments through the observance of religious services and festivals. Family Masses are held monthly in both our school parishes and we are privileged to share a weekly Class Mass in school, which we encourage parents, carers and family members to attend.
HRSE (Human Relationships and Sex education) falls within the general framework of Religious Education within the school, and in accordance with the moral and dogmatic teaching of the church. We use Life To The Full resources to teach HRSE and parent and carers are informed of any special programmes in sex education.
Parents have a legal right to request that their child be withdrawn from lessons in Religious Education or from acts of Collective Worship. This may be done in consultation with the Headteacher.
